Juan Manuel Márquez Mendez (Juan Manuel Marquez) Started to be a professional boxer on May 29, 1993. After 15 years of pro boxing he became the fourth Mexican-born boxer to become a three-division world champion, 126lbs - 57.15kg, 130lbs - 58.97kg and 135lbs - 61.23kg. On April 14, 2012 he defeated Serhiy Fedchenko of Ukraine thus making him a four-division world champion. He captured the WBO Light Welterweight Title (Interim) 140lbs - 63.5kg. He is married to Erika they have 2 sons and a daughter. Aldo as the eldest son followed by Juan Emilio and the youngest is Gigi. Marquez is known for his speed, counter-punching and can string together series of combination punches from various angles. In his 6 losses he never loss due to a knockout, because he constantly rotating or moving his left hand and releasing overhand punches, Marques wont be an easy sitting duck target for any opponent.
Juan Manuel Marquez's Boxing Family Background
Juan Manuel is the brother of Rafael Marquez, who is a former world champion at the Bantamweight and Super Bantamweight division. They both trained under Ignacio Beristain (up to now is Juan Manuel Marquez's Trainer and Manager) and Assistant Japanese Toshi Nakajima, who is considered as one of Mexico's best boxing trainers. At one time, the two were listed in Ring Magazine's top ten pound-for-pound list. They are one of four sets of Mexican brothers to hold world titles.
Amateur Career
Marquez had an amateur record of 35-1 that included two Golden Glove tournament wins. He made his professional boxing debut at age 19 on May 29, 1993, and lost his first bout via disqualification to Javier Duran.
Professional Career
Marquez won his first title on February 3, 1997 when he defeated Cedric Mingo of United States for the vacant WBO NABO Featherweight Title. He successfully defended this title for 7 times. Then he vacated this to fight Freddie Norwood for the WBA Featherweight Title on September 11, 1999 which he eventually loss to Norwood. But on 2000-05-20 the WBO NABO Featherweight Title is vacant again and he won it again by beating Roque Cassiani of Colombia.
Marquez then took on 2 time world champion Manny Pacquiao in May 8, 2004. Marquez was knocked down three times in the first round, but bravely fought back to win many of the remaining rounds. This resulted the match to be a draw.
Marquez traveled to Indonesia, Karang Melenu Sports Hall, Kutai Kartanegara to face WBA Featherweight champion Chris John only to lose by unanimous decision. Marquez protested the decision stating that the deducted points would have garnered him a split decision victory. Marquez's scores were deducted twice for repeated low blows in rounds 10 and 11.
He moved up to the Super Featherweight Division and won the WBC Super Featherweight Title when he defeated Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico by unanimous decision on March 17, 2007. As his first WBC Super Featherweight Title defense, he fought Rocky Juarez of United States and won by unanimous decision on November 3, 2007. For the second meeting and his second WBC Super Featherweight Title defense, he fought Manny Pacquiao on March 15, 2008. The match lasted until the final round and Manny Pacquiao won by split decision.
He moved up another weight class which is the Lightweight Division. He fought Joel Casamayor of cuba and defeated him to win The Ring Magazine Lightweight Title on September 13, 2008. On February 28, 2009 Marquez defeated Juan Diaz of United States for the his IBO lightweight title. Marquez also won the vacant WBO Lightweight Title and the vacant WBA Lightweight Title. Marquez won by TKO on the ninth round.
Marquez moved up another weight class which is Welterweight Division. He fought the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. of United States. The fight was scheduled to take place at 144 lbs on July 18, 2009; but was postponed due to a rib injury sustained by Mayweather. The bout was rescheduled and held on September 19, 2009. During the official weigh-in for their 144 lb bout, Marquez weighed in at 142 lbs and Mayweather weighed in at 146 lbs thereby incurring a financial penalty as he was 2 pounds over the catchweight. Although, it was later found out that an agreement had been found between both parties just before the weigh-in which allowed Mayweather to come in over the catchweight. Marquez down once in the 2nd round, and once again bravely fought back to last for all of the remaining rounds. But came short Mayweather won by unanimous decision.
Unsuccessful with the welterweight division. Marques returned to lightweight division, and fought Juan Diaz of United States for the second time and won again this time by unanimous decision. He won two more lightweight division fights when he defeated Michael Katsidis of Australia and Likar Ramos of Colombia.
