Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao (Manny Pacquiao) was born on December 17, 1978 in Kibawe, Bukidnon, Philippines. Moved to General Santos City, Cotabato del Sur, Philippines. He is the son of Rosalio Pacquiao (A.K.A Tatay (in English: Daddy) Rosalio and Pac-dad) and Dionisia Pacquiao (A.K.A. Nanay (in English: Mommy) Dionisia, Aling (in English Mom) Dionisia, Pac-mom and Mommy “D”) Manny’s parents got separated when he was just in sixth grade. The former couple was married for almost 20 years when Rosalio started to work in another town. Dionisia discovered that her husband was living with another woman. Despite the betrayal, Dionisia kept the pain to herself and taught her children to continue respecting their father. The children, especially Manny, grew up wishing that their father would return. Dionisia and the children never stopped loving Rosalio. His long whish for his parents to be together again was short lived and it’s for the children and for Manny. As their support for Manny, Dionisia and Rosalio flew together to the US to watch the fight against Miguel Cotto. Rosalio’s 1st time to watch his son fight live in the world arena, Dionisia’s 2nd time. The 1st was when Manny fought Ricky Hatton. Before, Dionisia never watched Manny fight. She would lock herself up in a room; get on her knees and pray. She will only stop praying after the fight. Manny, on the other hand, every time he comes back from a successful fight abroad, he attends a thanksgiving Mass in Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila to pray.
Dionisia has always been open to reunite with her separated husband but was reported to have said that if Rosalio wants to come back, he will have to leave his new wife and children behind. Manny’s father already has a new family. Dionisia, who is now also a celebrity, said she has no luck in love.
Manny is the 4th among six siblings: Liza Silvestre and Domingo Silvestre (from first husband of his mother Alfonso Silvestre) and Isidra Pacquiao, Alberto “Bobby” Pacquiao and Rogelio Pacquiao. Manny is married to Maria Geraldine "Jinkee" Jamora on May 10, 2000. They have four children: Emmanuel Jr. (Jimuel), Michael Stephen (Michael), Mary Divine Grace (Princess), and Queen Elizabeth. He resides in his hometown General Santos City, South Cotabato, Philippines.
Pacquiao is also a military reservist with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, first of the three highest ranks for enlisted personnel. He was given the rank of Sergeant Major for the 15th Ready Reserve Division of the Philippine Army. In his younger days, he dreamed of becoming a soldier, and was enlisted in the military reserve force as an Army Private.
Aside from wishing that his parents will reconcile and return to each other’s arms, he also dreams to be a congressman. Last May 14, 2007 election, Manny ran for the congressional seat in General Santos City. But defeated by Darlene Magnolia Antonino-Custodio. The next election, Manny tried again, this time in Kiamba, Sarangani province, hometown of his wife. The election was held on May 10, 2010. Which is also the 10th anniversary of Manny and Jinkee. On May 13, 2010, Manny was officially proclaimed congressman of Sarangani district. He became the first Filipino professional boxer to hold a national public office while still active in the ring.
Pacquiao finished his elementary education at Saavedra Saway Elementary School in General Santos City. But failed to finish high school at that time, due to poverty. He left his home at the age of 14, because his mother, who had six children, was not making enough money to support her family. Pacquiao and with his two younger brothers, Alberto “Bobby” Pacquiao, also a professional boxer, and Rogelio Pacquiao, the youngest and now the current chair of Apopong village, were selling cellophane bags at the city public market to augment the family income.
In February 2007, he took and passed a high school equivalency exam, making him a high school graduate and eligible for college education. Department of Education awarded him a high school diploma.
Pacquiao enrolled for a college degree at Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU) in General Santos City where he is taking up a business management course.
In February 18, 2009, Pacquiao was granted the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humanities by Southwestern University (SWU) at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Lahug, Cebu City. The Southwestern University, through a board resolution, has chosen to grant Manny Pacquiao the honorary degree for his exemplary performance and achievements in sports specifically in boxing. This also includes his humanitarian acts in helping the victims of typhoon and displaced families brought about by the insurgency problems in Mindanao.
Dionisia Pacquiao didn’t want Manny to box. This was the reason why Manny kept his training secret when he was starting as an amateur. She said, “No parent would want to see their son engaging in a brutal fight inside the ring.” But she understands how powerless parental desires can be.
Her dream was to see Manny becoming a priest.
Pacquiao pursue a boxing career after the death of his close friend Eugene Barutag who is also boxer in 1995. Pacquiao’s 1st bout was on January 22, 1995, held in Mindoro Occidental, Philippines and shown on Vintage Sports “Blow by Blow”. Four round bout, which he won over Edmund Enting Ignacio via decision. His age is only 16 at that time.
On February 9, 2006, Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila, Philippines, Manny lost for the 1st time via a 3rd knockout by Rustico Torrecampo, also a Filipino. Pacquiao failed to make the required weight, so he was forced to use heavier gloves than Torrecampo, thereby putting him at a disadvantage. He was unable to beat the 10 count. Replay of the knockout shows an angle in which Torrecampo appears to hit Pacquiao with a borderline belt shot at the same time.
That didn’t stop him to pursue his boxing career. He won his 1st title the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) flyweight title. He defeated Chokchai Chockvivat of Thailand via a 5th round Knockout.
Even after wining his 1st title, he didn’t stop training. He trains hard outside and inside the ring. Even though it is not a title or an event match Pacquiao is serious when it comes to boxing. He even have some sparing partners like Arron Robinson a welterweight 6-wins 2-draws 1-lost and 4 wins by knockouts record. Who said after he suffered a knockout from Pacquiao “he did not see the punch coming, and added that he was surprised by Pacquiao’s punching power”. Another sparring partner suffered a knockout from Pacquiao, Jamie Kavanagh with a record of 168wins 12losses record in his amateur boxing. During their sparring match Manny had to back up a couple of times, but Kavanagh really hit him with some serious shots. Kavanagh came in a little too brave.
Pacquiao is the 1st boxer in history to win titles in eight different weight divisions. He also achieved 19 titles in his boxing career.
The acting career of Pacquiao started as an extra to some movies, and guest appearances at some ABS-CBN shows.
